Horses taken for night time joy rides

A Kawerau practice of taking horses for night time joy rides is exposed after an alleged horse thief was hit by a car on Saturday night.

The Kawerau man was taken to Whakatane Hospital with broken ribs and a possible broken arm after being struck by a car while allegedly stealing horses from an Eastern Bay of Plenty property.

The accident happened on the outskirts of Kawerau just after 9pm while the driver was travelling towards the township from Hongi's Track.

The accident happened near the Tui Glen Horse ranch and a spokesperson at the ranch, who did not want to be named, says it was a neighbour's horses being stolen.

'There has been a bit of a problem in Kawerau in general. They have been taking a few over the last couple of months.

'They take them for joy rides and we get them back.”

Kawerau Police referred questions to their Senior Sergeant, who was unavailable for comment this morning due to a two-day training course.
