Water heating grants ending

Home-owners only have four months to install energy efficient water heating systems if they want a Government grant towards the cost.

The deadline was announced in the recent Budget, with money reprioritised to go to insulation grants for 41,000 homes under the Heat Smart programme.

Grants of $500 or $1000 are only available for homeowners who have solar or heat pump water heating systems installed by the end of October.  To be eligible for grants, systems needed to be bought by June 14, 2012.

Energy and Resources Minister Phil Heatley says because most New Zealand electricity was generated from renewable resources it was not so important for the Government to financially support renewable power at the household level.

“This is especially relevant now, when we need to prioritise Government spending.”

The Budget includes more investment in business energy efficiency, with the aim of cutting greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs.

Instead of providing grants the government is encouraging homeowners to select efficient water heating through extensive information at www.energywise.govt.nz

An Energywise spokeswoman says the focus is on providing good information for consumers to help them make energy efficient choices.
