Tauranga Sports and Katikati will meet in a winner take all contest, at the Tauranga Domain today, when the two sides square off in the Seeka KI Western BOP Championship Final.
The two combatants, who will fight out the right to hold the Combined Cup aloft in victory at the Tauranga Domain title decider, come from different spectrums of Bay of Plenty Rugby.
The Tauranga Sports second fifteen, comes from one of the largest clubs in the Bay of Plenty, with the club fielding two senior sides, a Colts team and a Presidents grade side. By contrast Katikati are one team club who receive outstanding support from the town on the Bay of Plenty boundary.
Both sides have just a solitary stain on their ledger card, since the local competition kicked off in balmy days of the last weekend in March.
The Tauranga defeat came in the season opener, when they met their championship final opponents, at Moore Park in Katikati.
While Tauranga Sports lost a real battle of attrition 15-8 that was the last occasion that they tasted defeat in the title race.
The Katikati sole defeat came in round six on Matakana Island, when the Island side won a thriller defeating Katikati 17-16.
While Katikati currently hold the Hardy Rosebowl (WBOP Challenge Trophy), the long time Western Bay prize won’t be on the line in the title decider.
The weekend also brings the start of the Western Bay second round, which is contested by teams who finished fifth to twelfth, in the Western Bay title race. Matakana Island who just missed out on making the Baywide playoffs, will be heavily favoured to defeat Rangiuru, on Matakana Island.
The big improver during the season has been Greerton Marist.
They kick off the second round against Rangataua at Greerton Park. Te Puna are likely to have a good tussle with Judea in one of the early games at Maramatanga Park, with Papamoa likely to be too good for Eastern Districts at the Paengaroa Domain.
