A Bay of Plenty man is in custody after admitting to indecently assaulting a five-year-old girl in Katikati in 2006.

Hemi Ashby, 22, pleaded guilty to two charges of indecent assault and one charge of breaching his bail during his appearance in Tauranga District Court on Wednesday.

Ashby's lawyer sought bail for his client stating that his lifestyle six years ago meant he could not remember the details of the incident and could therefore not deny the charge.

The judge denied the bail application due to the vulnerability of the victim and the serious nature of the crime.

The judge indicated a jail sentence is likely.

Ashby is remanded in custody and will be sentenced on July 26.
