The Aongatete teenager accused of the arson of the Life Education Trust mobile classroom at Brookfield Primary School is yet to enter a plea.

Zachery Fitzpatrick, 17, is charged with burglary and arson in relation to the fire that destroyed the mobile unit valued at about $230,000.

A 17-year-old was arrested and charged with burglary and arson.

Firefighters were called to Brookfield Primary School around 5.50pm on Tuesday, June 12 where the unit located on the tennis courts at the school was ablaze.

It was discovered the unit had been broken into before the fire was lit inside the room.

“We extinguished the fire and called the police,” says Tauranga senior station officer Len Sabin.

“We have had a number of arsons in the area in the last few weeks. They caught one guy from security footage of the New World fire a week before.

“There’s been a spate of them. The police got there pretty quick. They found someone standing in the field watching, and it turns out he was their man.”

Len says the man was led from the scene in handcuffs.

The accused teen is due to reappear in Tauranga District Court on August 8.
