The Desert Road is open after being closed this morning due to ice.
Motorists were warned on Friday of icy conditions on the Desert Road as police implored motorists to drive carefully.
Overnight snow and rain turned to ice as the cloud cover lifts and temperatures drop, say police.
A MetService spokesperson says snow flurries were predicted earlier this week along with southerlies for Tauranga for much of the week.
MetService last night predicted snow showers to develop on the Desert Road overnight with up to four centimetres expected to accumulate during the course of today.
Occasional snow or sleet showers are also forecast for the Rimutaka Hill Road this morning.
