A motorcyclist is in Waikato Hospital in serious condition after his motorbike left the road and crashed into a tree in the Bay of Plenty on Friday.

The Tauranga-based TrustPower TECT Rescue Helicopter was called in to transfer the man to Waikato Hospital from Whakatane Hospital on Friday night.

Pilot Liam Brettkelly says the man crashed into a tree earlier in the day, near Opotiki.

“He received critical head and leg injuries as a result of the accident.”

Police are investigating the incident and say it is not yet clear whether speed or driver inattention were factors in the crash.

In a separate incident, a Tauranga cyclist was injured when the bike he was riding collided with a car on Cheyne Road around 10.30pm.

The 44-year-old Tauranga man was transported to Tauranga Hospital with moderate injuries, says a St John Paramedic spokesperson.

“He was coming down a hill and collided with a car.”

Coming along Fraser Street at about 9pm nearly cleaned up 2 young cyclists "hooning" out of Oxford Street and straight across Fraser. Dark clothing, no cycle helmets, no lights, no thinking! To add to that, they were followed closely by a dog which nearly got bowled over. Scary stuff!
