Three men found driving along Papamoa Beach Road with a 15 metre length of stainless steel pipe on a small trailer were this week charged with the theft of the pipe.
Police learned the 20cm diameter pipe had been stolen from the Hewletts Road area.
Some Welcome Bay residents lost power on Wednesday night when a power pole near the intersection of Welcome Bay Road and James Cook Drive came down.
When the fire service arrived on the scene the power lines were sagging low over the road. They stopped traffic and waited for power authority to arrive and fix it.
