Call for library registrations

Tauranga City Council is calling for expressions of interest from companies keen to be involved in a redevelopment of the Greerton Library and surrounding land.

The project provides an opportunity for a suitable company to develop a new library and adjacent commercial site council owned land, says a council spokesman.

It includes the existing Greerton Library, a commercial site with four retail tenancies, two residential dwellings and adjoining land used as open space, car parking and service lanes.

Council requires that parking, open space and access be retained as part of any proposal.

@ Phailed - and before we know it we won’t have to leave our homes to do anything!! Personally I would prefer to read a traditional printed book rather than an e-book. Other’s may prefer the e-book - to each their own.

You can charge your ebook with a solar charger, no need for mains power. Ebook readers don’t use a normal computer screen but e-ink screens which are the same as printed books on the eyes. Once you have your light ebook reader, you get new books over the internet. Libraries if you haven’t noticed, consume vast amounts of energy on heating and cooling. Books require the continued felling of trees. The library bus belches diesel fumes and diesel fumes are carcinogenic. Naturally, those with a vested interest in libraries will stick up for them and try and reject the new technology of e-books which if embraced will increase the access to and love of reading. But e-books don’t build empires?

E books are more enviromentally responsible?? The run off power and Possibly determental for eyes. Library books are shared by many people one would think this is more enviromentally responsible. It also gets people off there backside and away from a computer.

The involvement of Council in any commercial development rings alarm bells for me because I’m unsure they have the ability to do a deal that actually benefits ratepayers. There’ll end up being every reason imagineable why Council will end up in a subsidy situation. Just what are we doing expanding Greerton library when Council has a huge debt? The trend is towards e-books which don’t require libraries and are far more environmentally responsible.

A large site that begs for a design option to maximise the benefit of the Village Square, library and complimentary commercial development. Would make for a nice community share opportunity - food for thought!
