Naturist park up for grabs

After more than 16 years in business, the Katikati Naturist Park is up for sale.

For $1.9 million the park could be yours – but there is one condition: the park must remain a clothing-free zone.

The Katikati Naturist Park has been open for 16 years and currently attracts around 30 people per night.

Purchased in 1996 by Kevin and Joan Sampson, the Katikati Naturist Park has become perhaps the best well-known naturist park in the country and will be sorely missed by its owners.

'It's time for us to move on,” says Kevin.

'We're looking forward to it in those ways but it will also be sad to leave the park behind.

'We've made a lot of friends out of our customers.”

Kevin and Joan purchased the park 18 years ago when it was just a 'messy, empty block of land”.

Today the park attracts around 16,000 paying visitor nights per year.

The 5.7 hectare property includes a motel, a pool, two spas, a mini-golf course, trampolines, three chalets, a recreation room, two ablution blocks and four kitchen cabinets.

'We've had a lot of satisfaction out of developing the park.

'As you get older, there's a lot of physical work involved and you've got to take that into account. We will regret it in some ways, but there are always opportunities.”

Kevin says there has been some interest in the property but nothing serious yet.

The couple have made it a condition of the sale that the park remains a nudist park for at least ten more years.

'We very much support the principles of naturism; we've put our heart and soul into the place for 18 years.

'It doesn't actually make sense for anyone to buy it as a non-naturist park and completely destroy the customer base and start again.

'It's a good little business; it's a great lifestyle.”

Kevin and Joan are not sure what their future holds, but they plan on staying in Katikati for the foreseeable future and are excited about exploring some of New Zealand tramping tracks.

'It's a nice place to live – nice climate, nice people, nice community.

'There's a lot of tramping tracks waiting to be tramped, a lot of things to see and do.”

The Katikati Naturist Park is the only nudist park in the North Island and one of only two in the country.
