Police have apprehended two prisoners who have been on the run since escaping from Waikeria Prison on Thursday.

Police issued a media release asking for members of the public to call with information about Jesse Lee Ibell and Wayne Holmes, and as a result of the tip-off from a member of the public, the pair were re-captured around 4.30pm on Saturday.

Jesse Lee Ibell and Wayne Holmes have been apprehended by police.

Detective Sergeant Ross Patterson of the Te Awamutu CIB says police were contacted shortly after 2am on Thursday about two Waikeria Prison inmates who were unaccounted for.

Mr Patterson says both men have extensive criminal histories and the public was warned not be approach them.

“It is our belief when these men escaped they stole an older white Ford Laser car from Kihikihi which has been recovered in Kerepehi around midday.”

Both men are due to appear in the Whangarei District Court on Monday.
