New Zealand records are expected to be smashed at the North Island Powerlifting Championships in Tauranga today.
Event organiser and Waikato Bay of Plenty Powerlifting Association president Warren Russell is expecting a great day of competition at the Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre, with around 40 competitors expected from around the North Island.

Warren say the big challenge of the day is the quest by men’s and women’s teams from the four centres to win the North Island regional competition.
He says Waikato/Bay of Plenty’s men’s teams look very strong and predicts close battle between the local women’s team and Auckland.
Powerlifting, where you compete in the squat, bench press and deadlift, enables competitors to lift greater weights than traditional weightlifting and is ideal for building muscle and burning fat, says Warren.
