Te Awamutu police are monitoring the situation at Waikeria Prison, south of Te Awamutu, as Correctional staff work to establish the whereabouts of two inmates found missing early this morning.
Sub-Area Manager, Senior Sergeant Pete van de Wetering says at this stage the police’s involvement is limited as the Department of Corrections resolve a breach of security.
“Police were informed of the breach at about 2.25am.
“At this point it is believed the pair are still within the prison grounds, however a response contingency is in place if it becomes apparent the inmates have managed to get off the property.
“The Department of Corrections is the most appropriate point of content for any further information.”
