Power box explodes

A power box on the corner of Grenada and Monowai Streets created a scene for residents as it exploded around 2.40pm on Saturday.

Mount Maunganui Fire Brigade responded to the call to find the box, located outside a residential property, sparking and on fire.

Police cordoned off the street as fire fighters worked to put the fire out.

A resident in the street says the blaze caused smoke to fill the street.

The cause of the explosion is not yet known.

There were no reports of injuries as a result of the explosion.Video: Cameron Avery.

The power doesn’t usually trip out unless the fault manages to make a direct short circuit.... dry powder can sometimes kill the flames, but reignition is common until the power is isolated or the fault blows itself clear of any earhting!!

At least two similar incidents in our street. Was told by a worker that the boxes are "aging" and there will be more of the same. I see people sitting on these at times - could be a shocking experience? Question - does the power trip out when these things catch fire? If not, you wouldn’t want water anywhere near!
