Rena memento hunters will be out amongst those looking for bargains today when $380,000 worth of Maritime New Zealand equipment goes under the hammer in a clearance auction.
Turners Auction Tauranga branch manager Carl Jarmin says there has been strong interest in the auction – which includes 2500 pairs of gumboots along with overalls, safety vests, hard hats, spades and racks and other specialised equipment used in the Rena clean-up.

He says most of the items are brand new, and are being sold in boxed lots, while others items such as office equipment and whiteboards have only been used for a short period.
Maritime New Zealand Rena recovery manager David Billington says MNZ wants to get the maximum return possible and has set reserves on most new items.
“A lot of it is quite specialised, but items like gum boots which have been used in the actual Rena clean up could make good mementoes for those who looking for something.”
The auction is at Turners at 52 Glenlyon Ave in Greerton from 10am today. For a full list of items going under the hammer see: www.turners.co.nz/About/news/Pages/maritime_clearout_auction

Typical of a bureaucratic system, who ever the purchasing officer is, they should be auctioned, would it not have been better to purchase as required, and not have the mentality of, hey here is a pile of money, lets go shopping!!!!, I cannot beleive how much tax payers money gets wasted by inifficiencies, but as long as the paper shufflers get paid, it does not matter. And I agree with the previous comments, why not store them until the "next big thing", happens
