BayTrust and Sport Bay of Plenty are proud to announce the recipients of the 2012 BayTrust Scholarships.

The scholarships recognise both athletes and coaches and aim to support and assist Bay of Plenty sporting talent to achieve on the national and international sporting stage and coaches to develop new skills that can be delivered back to the community.

Dylan Taute hopes to win the Waka Ama World Championships in Canada this year.

BayTrust contributes $400,000 to Sport Bay of Plenty’s CoachForce programme each year and the scholarships are funded from this amount.

Both the athlete and coach scholarships are open to sports people from the region – covered by the BayTrust and Sport BOP – with the goal to keep local coaching expertise and sporting talent in the Bay.

The Athlete Scholarship recipients, aged 16 – 23, have achieved national representation at their sport; while the Coach Scholarships recipients are currently coaching at a recognised and endorsed level by their respective regional sporting organisation.

Sport Bay of Plenty says a remarkably high number of quality applications were received this year that highlight the exceptional sporting and coaching talent that exists within the Bay.

Benjamin Gibb has been competing in Canoe Slalom world championships since 2009.

Its great to see that some top athletes are being supported- so much is usually given to the bottom of the heap non-achievers and problem young people- these guys and girls must have commitment and guts to get to where they are- Well Done
