A nine-year-old boy who went missing from his Ocean Beach Road home on Thursday night has been found.

The boy went missing from his Mount Maunganui home at about 5pm on Thursday night.

He returned home just before 11.30am today.

Detective Sergeant Darryl Brazier says the young boy named Leighton walked back to his home mid-morning.

“He spent the night with a friend, who thought his mother knew.”

Darryl says Police are pleased he is home safely.

“We will be speaking to him about his behaviour, around leaving home, and not communicating with mum.”

The Arataki Primary School student was believed to be hiding somewhere close as he was new to the area after transferring from Pillans Point School.

Darryl says Leighton has a history of running away.
