Police are investigating how a driver hit a lamp post in Mount Maunganui today moments after the car was allegedly seen doing burn outs in the area.

The driver of the car hit the lamp post causing it to topple onto a resident’s car on Matavai Street at about 12.20pm.

A lamp post fell onto a residents car after it was hit by another vehicle.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says by the time police arrived the driver had left the scene.

He says the driver of the vehicle is known to witnesses.

“Police are continuing their inquiries.”

Oity the pole didn’t fall on the idiot’s car. Add the cost of the pole to the paltry fines that he is likely to get. Good on the witnesses - cough up!
