A Mount Maunganui man is in a stable condition in Waikato Hospital after falling from a crane while working on a grandstand at the Hamilton V8 track.

The 25-year-old man was working on the grandstand at the intersection of Tristram and Mill Streets when he fell about 20m from the top of a crane through a section of scaffolding at about 4pm.

The man never lost consciousness and St John district operations manager Sandra Lapworth says the man is "very lucky".

Waikato District Health Board communications manager Mary Anne Gill says the man was originally brought in in critical condition but is now in a stable condition in a ward.

The Department of Labour is investigating the incident.
