A five-year-old girl remains in a critical condition in Auckland’s Starship Hospital after she was hit by a ute in Rotorua at the weekend.

The Rotorua girl underwent surgery on Monday morning after sustaining serious head, chest and leg injuries when she ran onto Sala Street and was hit by a vehicle on Saturday afternoon.

Sergeant Chris Mcleod says the driver, a Tauranga man, is believed to have been traveling west along the street and was not speeding at the time of the accident.

The girl, who was visiting family, was standing on the footpath next to a furniture truck when she ran out into the path of the oncoming vehicle, says Chris.

She was initially taken to Rotorua Hospital before later being flown by the BayTrust Rescue Helicopter to Auckland.

She remains in a critical condition in Starship Hospital today.
