A quick thinking couple saved their house from burning on Monday night by calling emergency services immediately when they returned from collecting their mail to find their car on fire.
The Gate Pa residents parked their car in the basement garage of their Wellesley Grove home and went to check the mail when they returned to find smoke bellowing from the vehicle at about 5.30pm.

Fire fighters were called to the home where Tauranga senior station officer Len Sabin says the fire was beginning to involve the structure of the house.
“We managed to cut it off before it caused significant damage. The car’s a wreck.
“The owners were very lucky that they noticed it before they went upstairs. They did the right thing and called us straight away.”
Greerton and Tauranga fire fighters were called to the fire at about 5.42pm and were on scene for nearly half an hour.
