An abandoned car on Willow Street in Tauranga City is causing a stir amongst residents today.

The blue Honda sedan covered with police tape has been left on the side of the road on Willow Street near its intersection with McLean Street.

SunLive has received numerous calls from members of the public wondering what is happening with the vehicle.

Tauranga Police Senior Sergeant Rob Glencross says the vehicle was involved in a crash and is awaiting removal by its owner.

“I understand it was the end of last week or during the weekend.

“It was from an accident that had already been dealt with by police.”

Rob says police tape has been placed on the car so that people are aware police have dealt with the incident.

On inspection of the vehicle it appears the air bags have been deployed, the warrant has been scratched out and the registration sticker has been removed.

Rob says the car is awaiting removal by its owner.

“Depends on the situation of the vehicle. If the vehicle is on the side of the road and it is not in anyone’s way and there is no immediate need for it to be removed – ultimately it is the responsibility of the owner.”

“Certainly if there is an accident where a car ends up in a situation where it is impeding the flow of traffic, or we need to take them back to have them examined, or the owner wants it removed then absolutely we have them towed.”

Rob says in this case it is the owner’s responsibility to have the vehicle removed.

This happened on Saturday morning. It was an Indian driver who went through the stop sign and ran into the side of my mates Fairlane. He tried to do the old ’no speak english’ when the cops got there. His cousin came down to translate and through his cousin he tried to tell the cops that he did stop at the sign. Of course you stopped mate, thats why your car is all smashed up in the middle of the road is it? As I understand it he is a seasonal worker and since all the plates are now gone I don’t think hes coming back for his car. The driver of the other vehicle is ok and at home letting some bruising heal before returning to work.

Another case of the "strength" of someone in running away. Notice that the rear number plate has also been removed? Of course the driver/owner wants police to know who they are...

A great new business idea for council. Bring your wreck to Willow St. For no fee the council will store the vehicle, and the parking wardens will sell parts from it! A win for all.

exactly....

If they havent moved it yet then they are obviously never going to. Why not have it towed now (so it may be able to be repaired and on sold to cover removal costs, or sold for parts) before it is set alight or generally trashed by idiots and "then" the cops will tow it away.

Whats missing here

Thats right the owners, I am no sleuth, but either I have been watching to much T.V,or it is very simple. The owner does not want to know about it, and has done a runner
