Three earthquakes recorded north of White Island on Sunday evening may have been felt in the Bay of Plenty.

GNS Science reported three earthquakes within half an hour of each other with the largest measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale.

The first earthquake was recorded at 4.06pm measuring 4.8, about 110km north of White Island.

The second, recorded at the same location, was at 4.24pm measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale with a focal depth of 5km.

The third, six minutes later at 4.30pm, measured 4.1 in Richter magnitude with a focal depth of 6km.
