Coastguard volunteers responded to a call to a distressed boatie who claimed he was about to abandon ship off the coast of Tauranga last night, and solved his problems with fuel.

Tauranga volunteer Coastguard operations manager Simon Barker says the boatie got into trouble about three miles outside the A beacon.

“He made claims he was he was going to abandon ship.

“Our guys gave him some diesel and he drove in to the Bridge Marina.”

Simon is unsure if a mayday call was made as the skipper, from out of town, was spoken to by police when he reached shore.

The Coastguard’s TECT rescue boat returned to its berth shortly before 9pm.
