Summer is heading towards a close as the mornings become darker and the evenings get shorter.

WeatherWatch.co.nz reports the number of daylight hours is reducing by around three minutes a day – a total of 21 minutes a week.

The longest day of the year was in Auckland on December 22, 2011 when daylight hours lasted 14 hours and 42 minutes.

On the day the sun rose at 5.58am and set at 8.40pm – while today the sun rose more than an hour later at 6.59am and is expected to set half an hour earlier at 8.09pm.

WeatherWatch.co.nz says when the Autumn equinox arrives on March 20 the days and nights will be same length - 12 hours each - before the nights start to get longer as the country heads towards the Winter Solstice in the third week of June.

yay!! so lets get rid of this annoying extended daylight savings!!! Not everyones obsessed with summer...give me the autunm and spring any day...I like daylight in the morning not at night!!And you cant beat a cold stormy day/night for cosy romance or whatever...:-)
