More than 4000 students are set to swarm the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic campuses today as the 2012 tertiary academic year begins.

Students and staff, including those from partnering institutions, University of Waikato and Waiariki Institute of Technology, will be formally welcomed by powhiri at both the Bongard and Windermere Campuses from 9.30am.

Students then have two weeks to prepare themselves for the much anticipated Orientation Week, on Monday, March 5.

New student experience coordinator Kirsten Crossan says there is a whole variety of events lined up to help students learn the ropes of campus life, make new friends and set the scene for a busy and fun year.

“There’s something for everyone this year. This year’s activities are based around a daily market with businesses coming on board to promote their services and discounts to students,” says Kirsten.
“We’ve also got Rena oil wrestling, live music, t-shirt design comp, pool party, master chef and more.”

The events also include the ever popular street parade through Tauranga City on Wednesday, March 7 which concludes with a raft race on the Tauranga Harbour.
