A free acoustic concert by candlelight is being planned to celebrate Earth Hour in Tauranga on March 31.
Tauranga City Council sustainability advisor Michelle Elborn says the event will be held at a location in Tauranga, which the council is still working on confirming.
“There will also be a night market.”

Earth Hour is scheduled to take place at 8.30pm until 9.30pm on Saturday, March 31, with people urged to switch off their lights during that hour.
WWF-New Zealand is supporting Tauranga’s Earth Hour event with the city selected as the country’s leader for it this year owing to the community’s effort in handling the Rena disaster.
Mayor Stuart Crosby says Earth Hour is the perfect time to celebrate everyone’s efforts in the clean-up and recovery response since the Rena’s grounding, and Michelle Elborn agrees.
“Our Rena experience has provided our community with a serious reminder of the importance of our local environment and inspired considerable community efforts in the clean-up,” says Michelle.
“Earth Hour is about inspiring environmental action.
“It is therefore appropriate that our city takes a lead role this year, both acknowledging what has been achieved and motivating further action to assist our beautiful local environment.”
Earth Hour began as a one-city initiative in 2007, and has since grown to be a 5251 city strong global movement, reaching 1.8 billion people in 135 countries across all seven continents.

Yeah I’ll be turning everything on hell even the toaster. These people are like those nutters who drove their cars to a protest about offshore drilling. They won’t change a thing but at lest they will get the warm fuzzies sitting around in the dark singing kumbyah. Huge yawn.
