It’s about time that there was some common sense practised in local councils. The Christchurch CEO pay rise debacle has highlighted what is wrong in NZ. Where do these people get the idea that they are worth, in some cases, three times the pay of the worker who has to contribute towards their lifestyles?
We all have only 24 hours in a day and many workers are having to take two jobs just to keep up with the cost of living, penalised too by more tax for their hard work. If these CEOs and other council workers think they are overworked and have a heavy workload and much responsibility, what are the councillors there for, Ballast?
There is something amiss when the most important people in the country, the rubbish collectors, out in all weathers, undervalued, taken for granted and in general ignored for the very necessary work they do. They earn their money and are worth every cent they are paid. They also have taxes and rates extricated from them to pay these people who believe they are a cut above the rest and worth more, on account of their position.
Without these grass roots workers who keep us free of vermin, disease, filth and rubbish all over the city, we would soon find ourselves in bad health.
How about a huge payrise for these very important workers doing the most important job in the country?
A. Taylor, Avenues.
