The Eastern Bay of Plenty region’s joint councils’ road safety committee is planning a special function to mark a significant reduction in the road toll.
Only three fatalities were recorded on Eastern Bay roads last year, compared to an annual average of more than 12 for the previous five years.
“You can’t celebrate three road fatalities because each of those is a terrible tragedy for the families concerned, but a reduction on that scale is certainly a positive development,” says road safety coordinator Maurice Tooke.
He says a large part of the credit for the decrease belongs to the Eastern Bay of Plenty Police.
“The police traffic staff have done a terrific job and their pro-active, high profile approach has borne fruit.
“Traditionally, alcohol is a feature of approximately half of local road fatalities, with speed and not driving to the road conditions the other major features.
“Hopefully, this development means more motorists are getting the message about the importance of sober and safe driving.”
A luncheon is planned at the Kawerau District Council chambers on February 20.

This just shows how these bodies have money to burn. Like the Western Bay equivalent group and their ridiculous "XXX drink Drivers caught since November 1st." Totally meaningless, no reference as to whether it’s larger or smaller percentage of the drivers stopped than last year, or the year before. Just dollars spent to fill sign. However if they’ve had what they deem a success, no doubt they’ll follow their eastern counterparts lead.
