A Tauranga woman is on a mission to raise money for the Melanoma Foundation since being diagnosed with the disease.
Lesley Mungavin loves playing in the garden with her grandchildren Hunter and Bradley.
Lesley Mungavin was told she had terminal melanoma on her 54th birthday, December 5.
Ever since she has been raising money and trying to find ways to fight the disease.
People wishing to donate money can do so into the following bank account:
12-3217-0167913-00
She says she has also received some positive news with her latest biopsy results.
“On Monday 23rd, I got a positive BRAF test, which means the newest drugs will most likely work for me if we can get them.”
Lesley also went to see the radiologist in Hamilton on Tuesday about brain radiation.
“I was hoping to get this in Dunedin where they do small area targeted treatment, which is very effective but they have decided I’m not a suitable candidate as I have lung tumours as well which they cannot treat.
“This came as quite a disappointment, but if the drugs work their magic then this is of less importance.”
In her fight against the disease, Lesley is also trying to raise awareness of the risk of sun exposure.
“My skin was burnt often – usually with the help of coconut oil.
“I browned up beautifully. What for, I don’t know, because back in Dunedin we all retuned to our peaches and cream complexions.
“However, don’t be fooled, my skin tone was always olive and those of you who think this is a defence – beware.”
