Port of Tauranga is redeploying its monitoring of port channels following the deterioration of the wrecked Rena overnight.
The Port will be utilising its side scanning sonar and magnetometer to sweep and monitor all of the port channels in and out of Tauranga after stormy conditions with swells of up to 6m sent more containers overboard.

A boat towing a sophisticated side scan sonar and magnetometer is escorting ships in and out of Port of Tauranga shipping channels, searching for containers from Rena.
Port chief executive officer Mark Cairns says ships arriving and departing the Port of Tauranga should exercise caution and maintain a vigilant lookout for any containers and debris from the wrecked ship on Astrolabe Reef.
“The port is fully operational, however we are taking measures to ensure the shipping channels are safe.
As anchorages off the port are likely to be affected by floating containers and debris, it is recommended that these are not used until further notice
Ships awaiting entry to the port are advised to drift north of Mayor Island.
