In today's weather forecast we are expecting a fine day but with some morning and evening cloud. Also westerly breezes.

It's a one-clothing layer day today with a high of 28 and an overnight low of 19 degrees. Humidity is 70 per cent.

High tide is at 9.10am and low tide at 3.30pm (Tay St). There's a sea swell of 0.3m and sea temperature is 20 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 8.32pm.

On this day in NZ history in 1855 a magnitude 8.2 earthquake hit the southern North Island having a profound impact on the development of Wellington city.

In 1951 a disastrous centennial yacht race began. Twenty yachts left Wellington for Lyttelton in a race to celebrate Canterbury's centenary. The fleet ran into a severe southerly storm and only one yacht officially finished the race. Two others were lost, along with their 10 crew members.

On this day in world history in 1901 a great fire ravaged Montreal, resulting in $2.5 million in property lost.

In 1950 Jerusalem became the official capital of Israel.

In 1969 NASA unveiled moon-landing craft.

Today is the birthday of Édouard Manet, French impressionist painter best known for Luncheon in the Grass. Born in 1832, he once said 'It is not enough to know your craft - you have to have feeling. Science is all very well, but for us imagination is worth far more.”
