Huge power outage after grid fault

A fault on the national grid is being blamed for a large scale power outage in the Waikato/Coromandel area.

Power is out in Matamata, Te Aroha, Morrinsville, Putaruru, Waihi, Paeroa, Kaihere, Katikati, Whangamata, Thames, Te Poi, Tirau and Cambridge.

A total of 21,917 properties are affected by the outage.

Transpower communications manager Rebecca Wilson says power is currently being restored.

'This is an outage on the national grid, which is affecting Waikato and wider surrounds.

'We are currently restoring power as we speak. Once our network is restored, it will take some time for local distribution companies to restore theirs, given the size of the outage.

'We expect this to take 60-90 minutes to complete. Some areas will come on immediately, others will take a bit more time.”

She says the cause of the fault is not yet known and teams are investigating.
