More than $30,000 has been raised and gifted by Bay of Plenty Farmers stores to Waipuna Hospice as a result of an annual Christmas appeal.

The Tree of Remembrance is an annual appeal which provides an opportunity to remember someone special during the festive season, and to make a donation local hospice services.

Customers make a donation at the counter to receive a decoration to write a message on and hang on the tree. In addition customers can also purchase a special bauble for their own Christmas tree for $10.

The majority of trees are hosted in Farmers stores, including the Tauranga and Bayfair stores and this year a total of $32,730.51 was raised by both stores.

The appeal is now in its third year and last raised just under $30,000.

Waipuna Hospice CEO Richard Thurlow says this year, marks the largest amount raised so far.

'We're truly grateful for the generosity and support shown each year.

'The appeal is a great way to pay remembrance to someone special during the festive part of the year, and it's also a great time to reflect.

'Every year Farmers have done a great job, and it's great to see such strong support from around the community.”

He says the donation will go towards crucial operating funds.

'We need to raise nearly $50,000 each week, so this money is going to make a significant contribution towards that target and in return directly benefit our patients.”

Waipuna Hospice CEO Richard Thurlow says, We need to raise nearly $50,000 each week..." How on earth these amazing folk provide the critical level of service they do under the constant cloud of fundraising defies my understanding. Few in our community have not had the live of a loved one enriched through the efforts of Waipuna. As ratepayers and residents we are constantly bombarded, having our credit cards pillaged, for all manner of nice to have whims of a few (never critical and mostly able to be self funded), constantly lining the bank accounts of consultants and over priced procurement - It's time to prioritize!
