Muggy, moist and not much wind

Today's warm humid conditions sets the tone for the rest of the week, with a bit more drizzle tonight and some rain mid-week as a decaying frontal system passes over.

'Basically the working week is the wet period,” says MetService meteorologist Tui McInnes.

'Things stay quite mild. You guys have got a max of 24 today, and it stays around that. It drops down to 23 around the middle of the week, but the overnight minimums stay quite warm, 19 and 18 degrees which is probably not the nicest for sleeping in.

'Presumably it's feeling a bit muggy right now and that's likely to continue with the cloud and the rain that keeps the humidity up there.”

It's a mild but wet week, with moderate strength mostly northerly winds.

'The wind won't stand out. It's going to be more the cloud and the rain that is going to be more prominent, entraining all that warm moist year from further north keeping the humid mugginess.”

It's all due to a low pressure system over the Tasman Sea decaying as it slowly moves over New Zealand.

'Because of that the frontal features become disconnected with the low and it does spread kind of slowly over the country,” says Tui.

'And because there is a high pressure system surrounding it decaying the low, the frontal features become less and less well defined.

'Toward the end of the week as the frontal air mass moves over the rain will be more persistent.”

Winds are in the 10-20knot range or 20-30km/h.

The showers are expected to ease Friday. There are no weather watches or warnings out for the week ahead.

'It's quite a mild week really.”
