The Tauranga man killed in a crash on the Maungatapu Bridge early on New Year's Day has been named.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager acting Senior Sergeant Wayne Hunter told SunLive this morning the man was 69-year-old Bronc Taepa, of Maungatapu.

Mr Taepa died in a two car crash on the bridge at about 2.15am.

'Police are unable to give any further details about the crash until they have the results of an autopsy,” says Wayne.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
