Former Tauranga Boys’ College student Chase Douglas has received top honours from the annual University of Waikato Blues Awards held on Friday.

Chase was awarded the Pou Ahurea award for Maori Person of the Year for his achievements in vocal performance.

Chase is a Hilary Scholar and is studying voice in his third year of a bachelor’s degree in music.

The 2011 Wallace Corporation University of Waikato Blues Awards acknowledges the university’s top sporting and creative and performing arts students.

This year more than 50 blues awards were given out to athletes and artists representing a range of disciplines.

Also among the award winners are former Tauranga Girls’ College students June Dams, vocal performance; Amelia Taylor, violin; and Mariah Ririnui, athletics.

Former Otumoetai College students Hannah Croad, beach volleyball and Tracey Hale, athletics, also received blues, as did former Bethlehem College student Luke Coxhead, hockey; former Mount Maunganui College student Alex Hitchmough, dance and theatre; former Te Puke High School students Gabe Young, Blokarting; Andrew Cameron, negotiation; and Nikki Whitehead, kayaking; and Tauranga homeschooled student Jarvis Dams, vocal performance.
World rowing champion Nathan Cohen and Silver Fern Laura Langman were named Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year.

The Creative and Performing Arts Person of the Year Award went to Jeremy Mayall, composition.
