Awaiting autopsy result on bridge death

Tauranga Police are awaiting autopsy results following the fatal crash on the Maungatapu Bridge early on New Year's Day.

A 69-year-old Tauranga man died in the 2.15am crash which involved two vehicles.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager acting Senior Sergeant Wayne Hunter says police cannot take any further action until the cause of death is known.

The result may be available later today.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
