Father and son missing in bush

Search teams are looking for a missing father and son in Te Urewera National Park.

A search and rescue operation is underway in Te Urewera National Park after a father and son failed to return home.

Police, LandSAR volunteers and a helicopter are currently searching for the father and son who have failed to return from a seven day tramp in Te Urewera (Waikaremoana & Waiau areas).

'The father, who is middle aged, and his teenage son were due to exit the bush at Hopuruahine Landing at 5pm last night but never showed,” says a statement from police.

'The shuttle driver waiting to collect them stayed at the meeting point overnight before reporting the pair missing to Police at about 10.30am.

'The pair were well-equipped for the tramp, and the father is experienced.”

Today's search will continue until dark.

Police ask that anyone who has been in Te Urewera over the last week, who may have seen the pair, contact Wairoa Police on 06 838 8345.
