What’s On? Street Prints & Carols

Eighteen large scale murals were left in the streets of downtown Mount Maunganui as a result of the first Street Prints Mauao festival in 2015. Photos: Tracy Hardy.

It's the penultimate Sunday before Christmas.

That's right: one more Sunday (which is in fact Christmas Eve), and then Christmas is upon us.

Already around the world, celebrations have begun. On December 6, Romanians kicked off the holiday season by celebrating St. Nicholas, who visits in the middle of the night to leave presents in the freshly-polished boots of good children (and sticks in the shoes of naughty children).

Here in New Zealand, we'll be the first country in the world to celebrate Christmas Day. With eight days to go, no doubt many of you will be thinking about last minute shopping. It's going to be another hot day (with the odd shower), with a high of 23 degrees and a low of 18, so maybe some shopping mall air conditioning is right up your alley.

For those who want to get out and about, there's Street Prints Mauao, brought to you by TECT and Powerco. It's described as ‘a community led project and initiative to inspire and uplift our rangatahi and people of Tauranga'.

With a core focus on community, youth engagement, creativity and beautifying our surroundings and with the help of 18 artists from around the globe including Spain, Ireland, Canada, New York and Australia, Street Prints Mauao is one of New Zealand's leading Street Art Festivals. The artists will be adding more murals to walls in downtown Mount Maunganui. For more info, visit http://streetprints.org.

This evening the Scholars Pro Musica, Tauranga's premier chamber choir, will be singing carols at a free event at St Peter's Anglican Church, 11 Victoria Road, Mount Maunganui. Come and listen to and sing your favourite Christmas carols.
