Mainly fine in the Bay today

In today's weather forecast we are expecting a mainly fine day with a chance of afternoon or evening showers and southwesterlies.

It's a one-clothing layer day today with a high of 26 and an overnight low of 15 degrees. Humidity is 83 per cent.

Low tide is at 10.08am and high tide is at 4.30pm. Sea temperature is 21 degrees. There's an average sea swell of 1.5m. Sunset tonight is at 8.28pm.

If you're going fishing today the best fish bite time is between 8.30pm and 10.30pm.

This day in NZ history in 1642 was the first recorded European sighting of New Zealand. Towards noon the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman sighted 'a large land, uplifted high', possibly the peaks of the Paparoa Range behind Punakaiki.

In world history on this day in 1972 astronaut Gene Cernan climbed into his lunar lander on the moon and prepared to lift off. He was the last man to set foot on the moon. In 1973 Great Britain cut the work week to three days to save energy.

Today is the birthday of Phillips Brooks, the Episcopal clergyman who wrote the lyrics for 'O Little Town of Bethlehem.”

He was born in 1835. It is also the birthday of Taylor Swift who was born in 1989. A

multiple award-winning crossover country singer, actress; she is the youngest-ever Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year and the youngest artist ever to win an Album of the Year Grammy.

It is also the birthday of Scottish poet William Drummond who was born on this day in 1585, and wrote "He who will not reason, is a bigot; he who cannot is a fool; and he who dares not is a slave."
