Matapihi slip under investigation

The slip beside State Highway 29A, Matapihi is being regularly monitored and a longer term solution is being confirmed, says NZTA Bay of Plenty Transport systems manager Rob Campbell.

'Markers have been put in place to alert people to the hazard and a temporary sight barrier will be installed to keep people and vehicles a safe distance from the slip.

'An initial geotechnical investigation has been carried out and we are currently confirming a longer term solution which will improve drainage at this slip site.”

The slip occurred in September, and has been marked off with a line of posts beside the highway.

The height of the drop and its closeness to the highway is concerning local residents who say there is no room for error along that narrow stretch of highway.

A woman who was pushed off the highway into the nearby trees last week could have gone right over the cliff, if had happened sooner, says the resident who doesn't want to be named.

'There is no pre warning or signage to show that there is this huge slip only metres from the tar seal,” says the resident.

'This is a major highway carrying many heavily laden large trucks and 1000's of cars daily.

'Surely with the holidays upon us one would expect the powers that are responsible for this area of erosion to be securing or warning the public of the danger or do we wait until someone goes over and down into the sea.”

Just pay the university $10,000 a year to watch out for the skip like they do at Omokoroa. Problem solved!

Considering there are no houses anywhere near the slip as it's in a rural area where does the so-called resident live, in the bushes ?

I think NZTA need to shave of the curly bits and dive straight in with a strong robust construction plan that will end in a happy outcome for everyone.
