A cloudy day in the Bay

This day in NZ history in 1867 the first passengers traversed Lyttelton rail tunnel. After six and a half years of construction, it took just six and a half minutes for the first trainload of passengers to speed through the 2.6- km tunnel linking the Canterbury plains to the port of Lyttelton.

In world history on this day, in 1908 a child labor bill was passed in the German Reichstag, forbidding work for children under age 13. In 1949 the United Nations took trusteeship over Jerusalem. In 1992 U.S. Marines landed in Somalia to ensure food and medicine reached the deprived areas of that country.
