Big thunderstorms across the Bay

Thunderstorms are continuing to develop this afternoon across central and northern regions of the North Island, with widespread downpours across Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Central Plateau in particular.

Across Bay of Plenty, Waikato and Auckland there are many large downpours.

WeatherWatch.co.nz has put out an alert around noon for around the Kaimai Ranges and Hauraki Plains to be aware of slow moving torrential downpours now which may lead to slips, hail, flash flooding & thunderstorms.

"Around 2pm we issued two more alerts, for air travellers and motorists around Auckland Airport and for motorists travelling on SH2 in Bay of Plenty."

A man who works in the Eastern Bay reported seeing a lightning storm this afternon.

He says he felt like a kid again watching the lightning across the sky.

"Just has a massive lightning storm spanning about 15kms. Absolutely amazing."
