Injured man winched from Leisure Island

A man is in hospital with multiple serious injuries after a fall on Leisure Island.

The 31-year-old man fell about 4-5 metres whilst visiting the island yesterday evening.

The Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to the scene at 5.30pm, to winch the man to safety and fly him to hospital.

A spokesperson for the rescue chopper says the patient sustained multiple injuries to his head, neck, and fractures to his feet.

"Due to the location of the man, the rescue helicopter utilised the Port of Tauranga Rescue Winch to extract him to safety.

"He was stablised by paramedics before being flown to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition."

Meanwhile, a woman was flown to Waikato Hospital after suffering a heart attack in her Bay of Plenty home.

The BayTrust Rescue Helicopter was called to an Opotiki address at 6.30pm to transport the 54-year-old woman to hospital.

She was stablised at the scene before being airlifted to Waikato Hospital.
