Today's weather forecast is for morning and evening cloud, and a chance of a shower, otherwise long fine spells. Light winds.

It's a one-clothing layer day today with a high of 21 and an overnight low of 15 degrees. Humidity is 91 per cent.

High tide is at 2.40pm and low tide is at 9.10pm. Sea temperature is 18 degrees. There's an average sea swell of about 0.4m and sunset tonight is at 8.14pm.

If you're going fishing today the best fish bite time is between 7.30 and 9.30pm.

This day in NZ history in 1893 New Zealand women went to the polls for the first time, just 10 weeks after the governor signed the Electoral Act 1893, making this country the first in the world to give all adult women the vote.

In 1979 257 were killed in the Mt Erebus disaster. On the morning of November 28 1979, Air New Zealand Flight TE901 left Mangere airport, Auckland, for an 11-hour return sightseeing flight to Antarctica.

At 12.49pm New Zealand Standard Time, the aircraft crashed into the lower slopes of Mt Erebus killing all 257 passengers and crew. It was the worst civil disaster in New Zealand's history.

In 2008 an Air New Zealand Airbus A320 crashed off the coast of France. All seven people on board, including five New Zealanders, were killed. It was 29 years to the day since Air NZ Flight TE901 had crashed in Antarctica.

In world history on this day in 1948 the first Polaroid cameras went on sale in Boston.

Today is the birthday of John Bunyan, who wrote Pilgrim's Progress. He was born in 1628. Today is also the birthday of English poet William Blake, who was born in 1757 and wrote "Make your own rules or be a slave to another man's."
