Today's weather forecast is for a morning and evening cloud, and fine in the afternoon. Light winds and sea breezes.

It's a one-clothing layer day today with a high of 22 and an overnight low of 16 degrees.

High tide is at 11.40am and low tide is at 5.50pm. Sea temperature is 18 degrees. There's an average sea swell of about 0.3m and sunset tonight is at 8.09pm.

If you're going fishing today the best fish bite time is between 4.30 and 5.30pm.

This day in NZ history in 1959 fifteen people died in a mysterious shipwreck when the coastal freighter Holmglen foundered off the South Canterbury coast. The cause of the tragedy was never established.

In world history on this day, in 1859, Charles Darwin published 'On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection'.

In 1874 Joseph Glidden received a patent for barbed wire. In 1902 on this day the first Congress of Professional Photographers convened in Paris.

Today is the birthday of Carlo Collodi, the creator of Pinocchio, born in 1826. It's also the birthday of Dale Carnegie, born in 1888 and author of 'How to Win Friends and Influence People'.

It was Dale who said "You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you."
