Warm spring day for the Bay

Today's weather forecast is for a fine day with light winds and sea breezes.

It's a two-clothing layer day today with a high of 20 and an overnight low of 12 degrees.

High tide is at 9.40am and low tide is at 3.50pm. Sea temperature is 17 degrees. There's an average sea swell of about 0.4m and sunset tonight is at 8.06pm.

If you're going fishing today the best fish bite time is between 7.30 and 10.30pm.

This day in NZ history in 1863 the British captured Rangiriri. Forty-seven British and 35 Māori were killed in a few hours, and the British victory opened the Waikato basin to the imperial forces.

And in world history on this day, in 1783 the first free-flight ascent in a balloon was made, going to over 500 feet in Paris. In 1911 suffragettes stormed Parliament in London. All were arrested and all chose prison terms.

One hundred years ago on this day In 1917, German ace Rudolf von Eschwege was killed over Macedonia when he attacked a booby-trapped observation balloon packed with explosives.

Fifty years ago today in 1967 President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the air quality act, allotting $428 million for the fight against pollution.

Today is the birthday of French philosopher, historian, poet, dramatist and novelist, Voltaire, born on this day in 1694. He wrote "I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it." He also said 'The most important decision you make is to be in a good mood.”
