A man is in a critical condition after a crash on State Highway 29 near McLaren Falls this morning.

A police media spokesperson says the crash happened at around 4.30am.

Motorists are being asked to take an alternative route and to expect some delays this morning.

"Emergency services attended the crash scene on the Kaimai Ranges, SH29, near McLaren Falls Road.

"A vehicle had broken down and was struck by another vehicle.

"Three other people have minor injuries as a result of this crash."

A reporter at the scene says two lanes are closed.

"Both uphill lanes are closed and one lane going down hill is open with traffic steady flowing past."

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating at the scene and motorists should expect some delays.

Tunnel the kaimais!!

Posted on 17-11-2017 12:48 | By jed

This is tragic, surely it is time to put a tunnel through the kaimais. Iceland just completed an 8km tunnel under a mounting for $137million USD. I think this is even a bit longer than what is needed for the narrowest point of the kaimais. http://icelandreview.com/news/2017/11/12/east-icelanders-celebrate-new-tunnel

Is SH2, between Katikati and Tauranga, a dangerous stretch of road?

Yes, there are too many cars on it and it’s not designed to handle that sort of traffic volume.
No, people just need to slow down and pay attention to their driving.
