Lake McLaren and the Ruahihi canal are to receive their annual trout re-stocking today with 500 rainbows and 200 brown trout fingerlings to be tipped into the water.

Lake McLaren provides year-round fishing with a bag limit of two trout and no size restriction.

The lake and canal are stocked with rainbows and brown trout but there are also some wild fish.

Tauranga Anglers Club members and the general public invited to turn out for the event.

The one year-old fish grown at Fish and Game's hatchery at Ngongotaha will be transported to McLaren Falls Park in the ‘live trout truck.'

One of the key messages Fish & Game are trying to get across is that new Tauranga residents in particular may not be aware of the good trout fishing on offer on their doorstep, says Fish & Game Officer Lloyd Gledhill.

Fish and Game takes great pleasure in giving keen anglers and their families a real hands-on experience and a small part in the annual re-stocking.

Tauranga club members have contributed directly over the years in various ways, including assisting in the preparation of material for local brochures, and serving as honorary rangers.

The lake in its park setting offers a very family-friendly fishing destination, with lots of picnic spots near the water and slow vehicle access, says Lloyd.

'It is close to the perfect spot for locals to introduce their kids to trout fishing in a great outdoor setting without any fast river hazards.”

Fish and Game advises people to consider buying a family licence, which permits two adults and two children or grandchildren to fish under the one licence, while the primary licence holder can still go out on their own.

The trout re-stocking will take place at 5.30pm at McLaren Falls Park.
